MISINFORMATION and fake news on social media have reached crisis proportions and now threaten the country’s democratic foundations.

This is according to Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel, as the House Tri-Comm resumed its investigation into digital disinformation.

“We will continue our exploration of the multi-dimensional aspects of this crisis, examining the roles of social media platforms, the impact of algorithmic amplification, and the psychological mechanisms that make individuals susceptible to false information,” Pimentel said.

The veteran solon said that the inquiry comes at a crucial time as the Philippines faces rapid technological changes that are reshaping how people access and process information.

He pointed out that while digital platforms have enabled greater access to information, they have also created an environment where harmful narratives can flourish.

“The rapid evolution of technology and the rise of digital communication platforms have transformed the way we consume information. While these advancements have brought numerous benefits, they have also facilitated the spread of false narratives, manipulated truths, and an increasingly polarized public discourse,” he said.

Pimentel warned that these developments are not only damaging to individuals but also to the institutions that support Philippine democracy.

“Today, we confront the daunting challenge of safeguarding our democracy and the integrity of our information ecosystem. Disinformation campaigns and the proliferation of fake news not only mislead citizens, but they also undermine trust in our institutions, weaponize public opinion, and threaten the very foundations of our democratic processes,” Pimentel added.

He cited the increasing volume of politically motivated fake news as a serious concern, especially with the 2025 midterm elections on the horizon.

“Lalong-lalo na po sa panahong ito na kung saan ay naglipana ang mga fake news laban sa mga tumatakbo ngayong eleksyon. Nakakalungkot isipin na sa pagpapakalat ng mga maling impormasyon, hindi lang ang taong kanilang sinisiraan ang apektado ngunit pati na rin ang ating bansa,” he said.

Pimentel urged the public to be more critical and proactive in fighting disinformation, adding that collective vigilance is essential in preserving a healthy information environment.

“Dapat tayong maging mapanuri, ‘wag nating ipagwalang-bahala at bagkus labanan ang mga ganitong maling gawain. Together, we can confront the challenges posed by fake news and disinformation, ensuring a healthier public discourse,” Pimentel continued.

He said the committee has invited various stakeholders to share insights and possible solutions to the ongoing crisis.
