A party-list solon appealed to President Rodrigo Duterte to urgently sign into law the Expanded Solo Parents Benefits Law.

Gabriela Party-list Representative Arlene Brosas said this law will benefit struggling solo parents.

The measure grants additional benefits for solo parents that are much needed amid rising prices of basic goods, such as the P1,000 monthly subsidy and 10 percent discount and VAT exemption for the baby’s basic needs such as milk, supplements and medicines.

“Dapat nang madaliin ang pagpirma sa Expanded Solo Parents’ Welfare Act para mapakinabangan na ito ng mga solo parents natin, sa panahong napakataas ng presyo ng mga bilihin at malawak ang kawalan ng trabaho. Malaking ginhawa ang maibibigay nito sa ating solo parents .

“It’s about time that we give the breather which solo parents have been pushing for the long time. During the pandemic, they were among those who were neglected in the government’s social amelioration programs,” she said.

Under the soon-to-be-signed law, scholarship programs for children of solo parents and prioritization in the hiring of solo parents, especially solo mothers, are provided for.

Gabriela Partylist has been pushing for the amendments to RA 8972 or the Solo Parents Welfare Act for years.
