Election summit

THE forthcoming three-day First National Election Summit should be welcomed by the Filipino people, particularly the country’s more than 60 million registered voters.

This early, there’s a snowballing move in various parts of impoverished Philippines to ensure the holding of free, honest, peaceful and orderly elections in May 2025.

Every three years, the electorate goes to polls to elect new government officials. Since election is the mainstay of a stable government, it is a vital concern for every Filipino.

That’s why we commend the Commission on Elections (Comelec), chaired by poll lawyer George Erwin Garcia, for holding the country’s first election summit from March 8 to 10.

“We will be meeting with our officials in the main and field offices to discuss preparations for the election summit this March,” according to the highly-articulate Garcia.

Since October 2022, Comelec officials have conducted 26 pre-summit activities to ensure the success of the undertaking, which was supposed to be held last week of January.

The poll body rescheduled the summit to give way to the special elections for the 7th Congressional District of Cavite on February 25, according to Commissioner Nelson Celis.

Rep. Jesus Boying Remulla vacated the post when President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. named him secretary of the Department of Justice after the last polls.

Commissioner Celis said Comelec authorities have had discussions on the new technology that could be possibly implemented for the May 2025 national and local ballotings.

The summit, he said, aims to provide a platform for a national dialogue and interaction with the participation of stakeholders in the review, formulation or enhancement of policies, plans and programs in election administration.
