Education road map

THE key to preparing this impoverished Southeast Asian nation of English-speaking people and the Filipino youngsters to be “globally competitive” is quality education.

With half-baked college and technical-vocational (tech-voc) graduates, the Philippines may soon find itself out of the fraternity of the world’s major manpower exporters.

Filipinos are shocked by the deterioration of the quality of our college graduates as shown by the inability of many of our professionals to find employment here and abroad.

In the view of many, there is that “urgent need to improve the quality of basic education,” particularly in public schools not only in the countryside but elsewhere.

Thus, we welcome outgoing Education Secretary Leonor Briones’ drafting of a road map aimed at enhancing the quality of basic education in the country.

The road map, which was launched last Friday, will be turned over to Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio, the incoming secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Dubbed “Basic Education Development Plan 2030,” the document aims to address the gaps, sustain and enhance relevant programs, and use innovations fostering resiliency.

Actually, it is the first time in the country’s history that the outgoing administration will turn over a well-crafted education road map to the new government.

But it is up to the lady vice president and education secretary from Davao City in Mindanao, a lawyer and a local government executive, to implement or not the road map.

People expect the incoming DepEd secretary to come up with highly-effective programs and initiatives designed to improve the quality of education in the country.

It’s a move in the right direction.
