THE Department of Justice has found prima facie evidence to indict eight members of the District Special Operations Unit of the Eastern Police District for two counts of robbery and kidnapping-for-ransom, National L Capital Region Police Office director, Major General Anthony A. Aberin said yesterday.

According to the official, the Office of the City Prosecutor of Las Piñas has recommended the filing of the criminal charges against the accused policemen in court following a complaint from the NCRPO.

Based on that resolution, appropriate information will be filed in court against the eight EPD-DSOU personnel, Maj. Gen. Aberin said. He added that the resolution found prima facie evidence with reasonable certainty of conviction against the accused policemen should the cases proceed to trial.

The resolution signed and approved by the Chief Prosecutor of Las Piñas City came after a meticulous legal evaluation.

The complaint filed against the chief of the EPD-DSOU, who has gone on AWOL status, has been set for a Preliminary Investigation on April 22 and 29.

Maj. Gen. Aberin said he has no role whatsoever in the designation of the accused EPD-DSOU chief in his position as he has never been with him in his previous assignments.

Maj. Gen. Aberin said he would see to it that the accused policemen would be sacked from the police force.

“Let me be clear — the NCRPO does not shield any wrongdoing. I will not condone any misdeed perpetrated by any member of NCRPO and I will ensure the filing of airtight cases against police scalawags,” he said.

The EPD personnel were accused of illegally arresting two Chinese nationals in Las Piñas City and stealing some P80 million worth of cash and valuables, which include several expensive watches.
