Calaca in Batangas is now a city

THE municipality of Calaca in Batangas became the country’s newest component city after a majority of the residents voted yes in a plebiscite held last Saturday.

The Commission on Elections declared Calaca, Batangas a component city, with an overwhelming 29,424 yes votes against 3,781 no votes.

Calaca can now enjoy the privilege of a full-fledged city.

Of the 58,881 registered voters, more than 50 percent cast their votes in 123 clustered precincts amid bad weather brought by Super Typhoon “Henry.”

Mayor Sofronio “Nas” Ona Jr. expressed his gratitude to every Calacan resident who supported the bid for cityhood.

With the development, Calaca became the fifth city in Batangas, after Lipa, Tanauan, Batangas and Sto. Tomas.
