THE Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) has yet to decide whether to compete or not in the Asian Elite Men and Women boxing tournament, the last big international event scheduled in the continent before the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The ringfest has been moved to Dubai from May 21 to June 1 from its original venue of New Delhi, where surging COVID-19 deaths forced the Asian Boxing Confederation to stage elsewhere instead.

ABAP secretary-general Ed Picson said association president Ricky Vargas instructed him to study the plausibility of participation in the tournament considering the adjustments, both logistical and financial, that the change entails.

“We will make that determination in a few days”, Picson said.

Most of the elite national boxers like Olympic-bound Nesthy Petecio, Carlo Paalam and Irish Magno are currently in Muaklek, Thailand in a joint training camp with the Thai national team. They have been in Thailand since March 10.

The other boxers are training in Thailand in preparation for the 31st Southeast Asian Games set in December in Hanoi.
