NATIONAL University stayed undefeated in the UAAP baseball tournament, surviving University of Santo Tomas, 15-14, in a slugfest yesterday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium in Malate, Manila.

With their third consecutive victory, the Bulldogs seized the solo lead in the standings, but it took a gutsy effort to fend off a late Golden Sox rally in the eighth inning.

La Salle took the second spot, using a seven-run ninth inning to frustrate Adamson, 14-6. The Green Batters moved up to 2-1.

Earlier, Ateneo broke into the win column of with a 7-5 victory over University of the Philippines.

The Blue Eagles forced a four-way logjam with the Fighting Maroons, the Falcons and the Golden Sox at 1-2.

Trailing 13-14 after UST plated two runs at the top of the eighth, Amiel De Guzman and the back-to-back title-seeking NU squad capitalized on their opponent’s miscues to reclaim the lead with two crucial runs.

Playing for the first time in 17 days, coach Romar Landicho was satisfied with the way the Bulldogs showed mental toughness against the Tiger Sox.
