THE dreaded coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which reportedly originated from Wuhan, China, has forced the closure of the entire Senate building in Pasay City on Monday, August 22.

Senate President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri ordered the lockdown of Senate offices after seven senators contracted the disease, which has killed millions of people across the globe.

Hit by the deadly virus were Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva, Alan Peter Cayetano, Imee R. Marcos, Cynthia A.Villar,Grace Poe, Joseph Victor”JV” Ejercito and Nancy Binay.

To ensure the health and safety of the senators and their employees when the Senate resumes its sessions on Tuesday, August 23, Zubiri ordered the secretariat to disenfect all offices.

And we, like other Filipinos, laud the Senate leaders for instructing the chamber’s officials and employees to just work from home and need not report to their offices on Monday.

“Together, we shall fight this virus and continue to deliver government service as efficiently as possible. Maraming salamat po,” said Senate President Zubiri in an advisory.

With the threat of a possible COVID-19 resurgence in the country as a result of the reopening of the economy, we urge concerned authorities to ensure the continued use of masks.

We also call for the intensification of the vaccination campaign not only in the heavily-populated Metropolitan Manila (MM) area but throughout the Philippines.

Witthout doubt, the seven members of the Senate contracting the COVID-19 disease will cause concern among the more than 110 million Filipinos, notably the poor.

But we are confident that the government, through its offices and agencies, is in a position to address the problem.
