TWO men were pinned to death after an elevator from the 38-story Burgundy Tower suddenly collapsed Friday before dawn in Makati City.

Southern Police District Director P/BGen. Jimili Macaraeg said Manuel Linayao and Rey Miguel Gilera, both elevator installer of DCL Contractor, died on the spot after they were hit by an elevator car that fell from the 38th floor of the building.

Early report released by the Makati police showed that aside from the two casualties, two other elevator installers were injured but Macaraeg denied this and clarified in his message that the initial report was wrong and no other persons were injured.

Investigation conducted by P/SSgt. Robert John Baligod and P/SSgt. Evelyn Quirante showed that at around 2:55 a.m., while the victims were fixing the building elevator inside its hoistway at the 6th floor of the Burgundy Tower located along Gil Puyat Avenue, Bgy. Pio Del Pilar, an elevator car coming from the 38th floor suddenly collapsed and fell to the basement, hitting Linayao and Gilera.

Makati Police chief P/Col. Harold Depositar said joint elements of the Makati Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, Makati Bureau of Fire Protection and Special Rescue Force responded to the area to conduct possible rescue and retrieval operations, while his men immediately cordoned off the area to prevent access of kibitzers and onlookers.
