TWO separate gun attacks rocked Negros Oriental on Christmas Day and on Monday, leaving one of the victims “dead on the spot,” a Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 report said.

The fatality, identified as Simbie Briones, a 21-year-old resident of Malangsuba, Barangay Bacacay in Dumaguete City, died while undergoing treatment in a local hospital at 8:45 p.m. last Sunday.

An initial investigation showed that residents of Bgy. Junob heard what sounded like an exploding firecracker at the house being occupied by the victim.

A local barangay tanod who checked the place discovered the bloodied victim and sought the help of his colleagues in taking the latter to the hospital while calling the local police for assistance.

Recovered at the scene was one spent cartridge of a caliber .45 pistol. Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (PPO) Director Colonel Reynaldo Lizardo said that his men immediately established checkpoints to intercept the fleeing suspects.

The motive behind the murder case is still being investigated as of press time.

The 2nd incident took place in Sitio Cansaranya in Bgy. Apoloy in Siaton, a known New People’s Army-infested municipality of Negros Oriental, 4 p.m. last Christmas Day.

Lizardo reported that three still unidentified armed men shot the victim, a 47-year-old man and resident of Sitio Cuadra in nearby Bgy. Mantiquil without any provocation before fleeing on foot.

The victim was rushed to the Cong. Lamberto Macias Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment before being transferred to the Polymedic Hospital in Sibulan for further medical attention.

An investigation showed that the victim and his family were on their way home after attending his brother’s birthday celebration when he was shot without any warning by the suspects several times in the body.

The other members of the victim’s family were unhurt in the gun attack.
