Waste disposal

DESPITE the presence of enough pumping stations, more areas went under water in the metropolis as “Typhoon Carina” battered the country.

And no less than President Marcos attributed this to the people’s continued “improper disposal” of waste and the worsening of climate change.

Throughout the country, people just throw their garbage, including plastic materials, into rivers, creeks, streams and other waterways.

President Marcos said the government’s flood control infrastructures did not work as intended due to the garbage that blocked them.

“Yung pumping stations natin (ay) marami na. Nagka-problema lang. Sana matuto naman ang tao,” the Chief Executive told newsmen.

“Huwag tayong nagtatapon ng basura dahil ang basura ‘yun ang nagbara doon sa mga pumping (stations),” according to Marcos.

We share the view of the President that climate change was also one of the reasons for the widespread flooding in MM and other parts of the country.

“Mas malaki ang baha, mas maraming nabaha na lugar kesa panahon ng Ondoy,” he said, referring to the typhoon that devastated the country in 2009.

However, President Marcos said that he is open to revisiting the designs of the country’s water pumping stations.
