UST, Perpetual Help clash in SSL
UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta renew their rivalry in one of two matches in the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Collegiate Pre-season Championship at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The Golden Tigresses and the Altas, who figured in the semifinals of the National Invitationals last month, square off at 3 p.m.after a colorful opening ceremony.
The España-based Lady Tgresses are determined to extend their dominance over the Lady Altas and open their campaign in this 16-team tournament on a winning note.
NCAA teams San Beda and Arellano University clash at 5 p.m. to complete the twinbill in the event backed by Mikasa, Eurotel, Victory Liner, Summit Bottle Water, Peri-Peri Charcoal Chicken, R and B Milk Tea, Potato Corner, Rebel Sports, Converge ICT Solutions and Genius Sports.
The second Collegiate Pre-Season Championship, which was introduced by Shakey’s in partnership with the Athletic Events and Sports Management Inc., (ACES) last year, comes off the heels of its other upstart leagues this year following the historic Girls Volleyball Invitational League (GVIL) and the National Invitationals.
But this time, all eyes will be on the Golden Tigresses and the Lady Altas first in the SSL Season 2 in cooperation with the Commission on Higher Education and the Philippine Sports Commission.
“Maganda ‘yung campaign namin last time sa Invitationals. Sana magtuloy-tuloy na maging avenue ito as we prepare for the big league,” said UST assistant coach Lerma Giron as young stars Angeline Poyos and Bernadett Pepito are tipped to lead the way after being hailed as the First Best Outside Hitter and Best Libero, respectively, in the National Invitationals.
“Our first opponent is Perpetual so gusto namin bawat game isa-isahin. Marami pa kaming kailangan trabahuhin. We still have rooms for improvement.”
Perpetual, for its part, is determined to give the Kungfu Reyes-mentored UAAP power a run for its own money with NCAA MVP Mary Rhose Dapol at helm.
The Lady Altas under the tutelage of coach Sandy Rieta reached new heights in the National Invitationals after eliminating two-time NCAA champio College of St. Benilde to barge into the Final Four.
All games will be accessible across all platforms live and on-demand through the social media pages of Plus Network and SSL.
