Tolentino fully supports P100 wage hike
REELECTIONIST Senator Francis “Tol” Tolentino supported the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines’ call for a wage hike for workers, amid the continued increase in the price of goods, transportation, and other daily expenses.
“The wage hike is timely. Our workers’ income has almost dried up due to the rise in prices,” Tolentino insisted.
The Majority Leader said that Senate Bill No. 2534 was approved in February last year in the Upper House, which seeks to increase the daily minimum wage in the private sector by P100, and they are now awaiting its counterpart in the House.
Tolentino also emphasized that “the last time there was a legislated wage hike was in 1989.”
“This decision should not be left to the wage board because it is also the duty of elected legislators,” he said.
According to Tolentino, low wages are connected to deeper issues such as food shortages, youth unemployment, and the country’s weak competitiveness in the workforce.
“Workers are not giving up, let’s not give up on them,” he said.
