
Three-way battle in Palaro
A THREE-WAY battle in the overall standings looms as Western Visayas, National Capital Region and CALABARZON took the top three places after several action-packed battles at the Marikina Sports Center.
As of 7 p.m. Thursday, Western Visayas leads the overall medal standings with 27 golds, 21 silvers and 13 bronzes.
NCR is a distant second with 22 golds, 27 silvers and 20 bronzes, while CALABARZON is third with 20 golds, 28 silvers and 21 bronzes.
Only two other regions — Davao and Northern Mindanao — have won more than 10 gold medals.
Davao has 13-1-9 gold-silver-bronze tally, while Northern Mindanao has 10-8-14.
Central Luzon SOCCSKSARGEN, Cordillera Autonomous Region and Central Visayas have nine gold medals each.
Only CARAGA and BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) have not won a gold medal so far.
An annual undertaking of the Department of Education, the multi-sports competition for students will continue until Aug. 5.
In 2019, NCR emerged as the overall champion with 86 golds, 71 silvers and 56 bronzes during the competition held last April 27-May 4 in Davao City.
CALABARZON finished second with 66-49-73, and Western Visayas wound up third with 49-40-58.
No Palarong Pambansa was held from 2020 to 2022 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
