‘Surrogate mother’

EAGLE-eyed operatives of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) have intercepted another “surrogate mother” at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Pasay City.

The BI, which is under the Department of Justice (DOJ), said the Filipina was recruited to become a “surrogate mother” for an unidentified client overseas.

After the interception, the bureau expressed concerns over the increasing number of Filipino women being trafficked for illegal surrogacy in foreign lands.

BI said it had earlier intercepted six suspected “surrogate mothers.”

The latest suspected victim of trafficking was intercepted at NAIA Terminal 3, presenting herself as a sales associate.

Initially, the suspect claimed that she was going to Batumi, Georgia for business,

But after further questioning, she admitted that she was recruited to become a “surrogate mother for P28,000 a month during pregnancy.

After giving birth, she was promised a final payment of more than P500,000 plus other benefits.

Filipinos seeking jobs in foreign lands would do well to consult concerned government authorities before accepting high-paying jobs offerred them.
