Stay safe, PNP cautions amid rise in drowning deaths
WITH the onset of the summer vacation, the Philippine National Police yesterday urged the public to be extra cautious, especially those planning to visit beaches and other recreational spots amid a noted increase in drowning deaths in the country over the past two years.
The PNP issued the call for safety comes after a concerning number of drowning incidents reported by the PNP Directorate for Operations.
In 2023, there were 125 reported drowning incidents while another 90 were recorded in 2024.
The highest number of drowning deaths were reported by the Police Regional Office 4A in Calabarzon region with 25 cases, the PRO1 in Ilocos-Pangasinan region with 23, and the PRO10 in Northern Mindanao with 9 incidents.
PNP chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil took the opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of always putting safety first.
“We all want to enjoy our holidays, but safety should always be a priority. The PNP is here to ensure security with our tourist police deployed across various beach resorts and tourist spots. However, we must not forget that our personal safety also depends on the precautions we take,” he said.
As part of the ongoing PNP LIGTAS SUMVAC (Summer Vacation) 2025 initiative, the PNP is working alongside local government units and other law enforcement agencies to enhance safety measures, increase patrols, and provide public advisories to help prevent accidents nationwide.
The PNP also continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and always stay alert while enjoying their time outdoors.
The PNP chief emphasized that police presence will be felt in high-traffic tourist destinations, particularly along the coastlines, where vacationers flock to relax.
Still, he reminded everyone to be responsible and keep safety in mind, not just when they are in the water, but in all vacation activities.
“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday season, but it is crucial that we all take safety seriously. Whether at the beach or in any public area, let us make sure we’re watching out for each other and following safety guidelines,” Gen. Marbil said.
The PNP’s appeal also aligns with the guidance of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who continues to prioritize peace and order across the country, especially during high-traffic periods like the summer holidays, said PNP Public Information Office chief, Colonel Randulf T. Tuaño.
The President’s focus on security ensures that citizens can experience a relaxing vacation without compromising their safety, he said.
“As families head out for their vacations, the PNP continues to be committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every Filipino. The police force encourages everyone to enjoy their summer, but to always keep their safety in mind,” Col. Tuaño added.
