Spread social change

AN official of the highly-influential Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) should be commended for calling on the Filipino people to spread social change.

This the people, particularly the registered voters, will do by participating in the forthcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), which are non-partisan.

The twin elections, which are democracy in action, will be held on Monday, October 30, according to the calendar of activities of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Bishop Broderick Pabillo, chairperson of the CBCP office on stewardship, called on the faithful to initiate change in their communities by voting on election day.

We share the view of Bishop Pabillo’s that the upcoming poll is the right opportunity to spread social change by choosing the right leaders to lead the community.

“In the coming election, we have an opportunity to change the management. Let’s use this opportunity to start real change from the barangay,” he said.

We agree with the soft-spoken bishop when he encouraged the righteous people to seek public office on October 30 to serve the barangay and the Sangguniang Kabataan.

Of course, we cannot overemphasize the importance of ensuring that the BSKE will remain non-partisan to realize the true goal of serving the interests of the people.

Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous politicians, mostly local leaders, “na siguradong makikialam sa darating na village at SK elections dahil sa kanilang political interests.”

This is expected because they want to use winning village and youth officials in 2025, when the nation goes to the polls again to elect new national and local officials.

Hopefully, however, the voters will wake up to their responsibility to help the poll body in ensuring that “ang mga politiko ay hindi makikialam sa darating na BSKE.”

Dapat lang!
