AFTER hearing the complaints of 12,000 sugarcane workers who lost jobs in Batangas, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez promised to personally seek aid from government agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to look into the workers’ plight.

“Kakausapin ko ang mga head ng mga agencies na ito na magbigay ng financial assistance for their livelihood at pang-araw araw na pangangailangan,” said Speaker Romualdez.

The DSWD is distributing Assistance for Individual in Crisis Situation (AICS) up to P5,000 for every family while the DOLE has Tulong Panghanap buhay sa ating Displaced Workers (TUPAD) which also gives up to P5,000 for each worker.

“December pa pala sila walang kinikita matapos biglang magsara ang Central Azucarera Don Pedro doon. Kaya kailangang-kailangan na nila ng tulong para sa kanilang mga pamilya,” said the Speaker.

Speaker Romualdez thanked the sugarcane workers for working tirelessly and ensuring the country’s food supply remains steady.

“Kailangan nating mapabuti ang kalagayan ng ating mga magsasaka sa tubuhan at matiyak ang sapat na suplay ng asukal sa bansa,” said the lawmaker from Leyte.

“It’s high time that we need to help them dahil kailangan nila ng tulong natin. And I promise to personally help them,” added Speaker Romualdez.
