Senators back AFP steps re Taiwan ‘invasion’
SEVERAL senators have expressed strong support for the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) readiness measures in light of possible Chinese aggression against Taiwan, while emphasizing the urgent need to protect hundreds of thousands of Filipinos living on the island.
Senator Joel Villanueva fully endorsed the stance of AFP Chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr., who instructed troops to “prepare for any eventuality.”
Villanueva stated: “We subscribe to the saying that ‘It is better to prepare than to repair.’”
He voiced full confidence in the military’s capacity to defend the country, but stressed that the safety of Filipinos in Taiwan must be the government’s top priority.
He also urged the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Migrant Workers to stay alert and proactive.
“We have the AKSYON fund under the DMW which can be used in case there is a need for emergency repatriation,” he noted.
Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. also expressed support for the AFP’s contingency planning but focused more on government responsibility toward overseas Filipinos.
“The government should be ready, as it is ready, for any eventuality. Kung kailangan i-repatriate ang ating mga kababayan doon, then that is what we will do,” he said.
“Dapat matiyak ang kaligtasan ng bawat isa sa ating mga kababayan na nasa Taiwan.”
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian commended the AFP for its “proactive stance,” emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive and coordinated contingency plan involving the DFA, DMW, and OWWA.
He called for “clear and decisive protocols for evacuation, repatriation, and crisis management” and stressed the need for immediate access to food, shelter, medical care, and transport in case of emergency.
“Dapat palaging mabilis at maagap ang ating aksyon upang mailigtas ang ating mga kababayan sakaling sumiklab ang giyera sa lugar,” he warned, calling for swift and organized efforts if war breaks out.
The senators’ responses reflect growing concern in the Philippine legislature over regional security, with a shared consensus that civilian protection must go hand-in-hand with military readiness. As geopolitical tension rises across the Taiwan Strait, lawmakers are urging the executive branch to ensure Filipinos abroad are not caught off guard.
