SENATE President Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri presides over the last Senate session, September 28, 2022, before Congress goes on break from October 1 until November 6, 2022.

During the plenary session, the Senate ratified bicameral conference committee reports on the SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Registration Act and the postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

Senator Grace Poe, the chairperson of the Committee on Public Services, said that while the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Act is not a “magic cure” to the problems hounding telecommunications, “it is a huge step in the right direction.”

“As the text capital of the world, we hold precious our means to communicate, and anyone who abuses or misemploy the system for their own fraudulent and unlawful interest must be traceable and subsequently held accountable,” Poe said.

For Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, the Senate version has been agreed upon as the working draft for postponing Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and elections.

He said after much deliberations by both Houses, it was agreed upon by the members to hold the next synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on the last Monday of October 2023. The subsequent barangay and SK elections will be conducted every three years after that.

These are the first two measures that will be transmitted to Malacañang under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration.

The Senate also adopted resolutions authorizing all committees to conduct hearings, meetings, and consultations during recess; commending the 2022 Order of National Artists awardees and congratulating the national weightlifting team for its outstanding performance in the 2022 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and the entire Philippine delegation in Skate Asia 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva co-sponsors Senate Resolution no. 161, congratulating and commending the Philippine delegation for their outstanding performance, where they bagged a total of 45 medals, including 28 golds, 13 silvers, and four bronze.

“These young Filipinos make us more hopeful and inspired to further support and promote our sports programs and local athletes,” Villanueva said.

The Senate session will resume on November 7, 2022.
