A progressive party-list has commended the Supreme Court (SC) for its recent ruling declaring as unconstitutional the postponement of the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

The decision upholds the democratic rights of the Filipino people, as well as the youth, to participate in local governance.

“This is a significant victory for democracy and the rights of the Filipino people. The Supreme Court’s ruling affirms that the voices of the grass roots and the youth should not be silenced and that they have the right to choose their representatives in the barangays and SK councils,” ACT Teachers Representative France Castro said.

The postponement of the barangay and SK elections, which were originally scheduled for December 2022, was seen by many as a move to curtail the democratic participation of the Filipino people.

The Supreme Court’s decision ensures that the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution are upheld and protected.

“Mapipigilan din ng SC ruling na ito ang madalas na pagpapaliban sa brgybat SK elections na para bang ginagawang gantimpala ng mga nanalong national at local officials sa mga nakaupong baranggay at SK officials para humaba ang kanilang termino ng walang eleksyon,” she added.

Castro said the barangays and SK councils play a crucial role in our local communities. They serve as platforms for the basic governance units and the youth to voice their concerns and participate in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives.

This ruling allows the grassroots and the youth to exercise their democratic right to choose their representatives and contribute to the development of their communities.

The lady solon urged the Commission on Elections to swiftly implement the Supreme Court’s decision and proceed with the scheduled barangay and SK elections.

“We call on the Filipino people, especially the youth, to actively participate in the upcoming barangay and SK elections. Let us make our voices heard and elect leaders who will genuinely represent our interests and work towards the betterment of our communities,” Castro said.
