Majority Leader says new party members from Basilan to inspire, give hope amid difficult times

HOUSE Majority Leader and Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin G. Romualdez administered the oath to 17 new members of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) from Basilan, on Saturday night as the party gears to strengthen its ranks for the upcoming 2022 national and local elections.

“We welcome our new party members with pride and confidence that they exude the leadership and character that Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats advocates for. Ang unang partido sa Pilipinas na nagbigay ng tamang karangalan at pagkilala sa ating mga kapwa kapatid na Muslim.

Our 17 new members from Basilan will be gunning for various local positions such as governor, mayor and councilors in the next elections and we thank them for trusting in the support and mentorship that Lakas could give them,” said Romualdez, president of the political party that produced two presidents, namely former Presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“While we continue to attract new members and consolidate our forces, we will not forget our true priority: to serve the Filipino people,” added Romualdez, a lawyer from the University of the Philippines (UP) and president of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa).

“We trust that our new members have the integrity, competency and compassion to serve the country. We know that they can be leaders who inspire and give hope during these difficult times,” stressed Romualdez, chairman of the House committee on rules.

Romualdez was assisted by Lakas-CMD Deputy Secretary General and Zamboanga Sibugay Rep. Wilter “Sharky” Wee Palma II in the physical oath-taking of 15 out of 17 new Lakas-CMD members. Two new members took their oaths online.

Negros Occidental Rep. Marilou Arroyo and Davao Occidental Rep. Lorna P. Bautista-Bandigan, both Lakas-CMD members, joined the event via Zoom.

Romualdez led the oath-taking of Alfiya Akbar who will run for governor, Isabela City Councilor Sarah Sali-Ismael who will run for city mayor of Isabela, and Board Member Paisal Sali for vice governor.

Tabuan-Lasa Mayor Brenda Junaid, Lantawan Mayor Nursiya Ismael, Akbar Mayor Alih Sali, Al-Barka Mayor Darussalam Lajid and Ungkaya Pukan Mayor Lutfurrahman Maturan, who are running for reelection, and Tuburan Vice Mayor Hussin Kalang, also joined Lakas-CMD.

Al-Barka Councilor Jaydeefar Lajid who is running for mayor, Tabuan-Lasa Councilor Muctar Junaid, Ungkaya Pukan Councilor Aley Ahmad A. Fernandez, Haber Asarul ( who is running for mayor in Sumisip), Paruk Majirul, Yasmeen Junaid, Sakib Salajin, and Aldam Sansawi also took their oaths of office.

“The pandemic will not stop Lakas-CMD from serving the nation and we hope to welcome more leaders and public servants to join us in the coming months,” said Romualdez.
