HOUSE Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin G. Romualdez has urged graduating students of the University of Mindanao College of Law to consider public service like pro bono work to help deliver justice for the poor and help improve the country’s judicial system.

Romualdez, a lawyer from the University of the Philippines College of Law, told the students and other participants of the Abogadong Dabawenyo Kapihan via Zoom about the importance of future lawyers seeking to serve the government and considering possible careers in the Legislative Branch of government. “Bar examinations will come your way and I’m sure you will do well.

Just remember after passing the Bar, please consider public service and Legislation, whether in the House of Representatives or in City Council. It’s definitely very, very gratifying to do something good for the community, people and the country,” Romualdez said during the forum organized by students of the University of Mindanao College of Law and Legal Counseling Prof. Jeffrey Coronel, a lawyer, in coordination with the Villarica, Coronel, Pojas, and Caharian Law Firm.

“So put your great talents and skills to good use and betterment of the country,” said Romualdez, president of the Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa), who extensively discussed the role of the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives during the forum in pushing the swift passage of President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte’s legislative agenda and in the approval of vital measures that are critical to the nation’s survival.

“Meantime stay safe, stay healthy, stay strong, study well, and focus on your hard work in becoming a lawyer. Soon, all of you will be taking Bar examinations and be ready to pursue your advocacies whether in public office or in private practice,”addes Romualdez, chairman of the House committee on rules.

“You will go long way in improving the judicial system by actively representing, hopefully not just those who have the capability (to pay) but those fellow Filipinos who cannot afford (legal services),” stressed Romualdez, president of the Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD). “We hope that someday you will consider spending a little of your time doing pro bono work. We really need that because there is a perception that the law only favors the rich,” said Romualdez.
