EVERY year, road accidents claim the lives of 12,000 people, including pedestrians, according to the Department of Health (DOH).

Vehicular accidents are a major cause of death among children in the Philippines, where May is observed as “Road Safety Month.”

In fact, road mishaps rank eight among the top causes of death all over the world.

DOH Spokesman Albert Domingo said the government hopes to reduce road traffic deaths in the country by 35 percent in 2028.

The government, through the DOH under Secretary Ted Herbosa, is implementing the “Philippine Road Safety Plan.”

The multi-pronged safety plan aims to achieve improved road safety management and faster post-crash emergency response to victims.

“Ang vision natin is actually a Philippine society with zero deaths on the road,” according to the DOH spokesperson.

Almost throughout the year, we hear about innocent people, including children, women and senior citizens, dying from road mishaps.

Let us then go after hard-headed people who drink and drive and other motorists, who have no concern for the safety of our road users.
