Ariel Rivera performs in Canadian musicfest

BEFORE Ariel Rivera made a name for himself as a singer in the Philippines, he grew up in Mississauga, Canada, where he lived with his family.
The travelling summer festival, Fiesta Extravaganza , once again brought smiles and excitement to Miramichi, New Brunswick, during its celebration on August 10 and 11.
This year’s theme, “Sining, Saya at Sayaw,” was a showcase of Filipino culture and heritage.
The festival’s main highlight was a special performance of Rivera, who is a Filipino-Canadian singer.
Many were thrilled when Rivera gave away roses to lucky female fans.
“I love it here,” Rivera said of the locale where he originated. “This is my vibe, small towns with Filipinos. It’s just like when you go to provinces in the Philippines. They were very warm.”
The singer-actor earlier tagged as “Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyalas,” added, “I’m thrilled to perform here in front of our kababayans. It’s an honor for me.”
The mayor of Miramichi, Adam London, was present during the event. He expressed his admiration to the Filipino community.
“We’re welcoming to our Filipino community,” said London “That is the largest visible minority group in Miramichi. We’re so proud there are over 18,000 Filipinos in our little town.”
The lobster-eating contest was another highlight of the festival. The game was participated in even by non-Filipinos, who competed to eat the most lobsters within five minutes.
The Fiesta Extravaganza, which started in Vaughan, Ontario in 2018, has now expanded to 10 provinces across Canada.
It has become a major cultural event in Miramichi, home to over a thousand Filipinos.
“We are also helping the province, especially the city of Miramichi, by improving what is called the retention rate,” disclosed the fiesta’s founder, Von Canton. “Encouraging the people to stay here and helping them develop a sense of identity in the area.”
Canton added this year’s festival not only celebrated Filipino culture, but also marked the 75th anniversary of Philippine-Canada bilateral relations.
He also added that Fiesta Extravaganza will expand its reach to additional cities across Canada and will make its debut in Las Vegas in the US next year.
