ANAKALUSUGAN Party-list Representative Ray Reyes reminded the public to take precautions against the heat as Christians observe Lent as he expressed concern over the potential health risks of the rising temperature.

“Prolonged exposure to heat may lead to cramps, exhaustion, or worse, a potentially fatal heatstroke. We urge everyone to take precautions and be mindful of their health as we observe Lent,” Reyes said.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has declared the start of the summer season.

Last Friday, the heat index in Catarman, Northern Samar reached 45 degrees.

Meanwhile, Dagupan City, Pangasinan, NAIA Pasay City, Metro Manila, Butuan City, Agusan del Norte and Mactan International Airport, Cebu also recorded very high heat indexes on the same day.

“Safety is of paramount importance and extreme caution should be taken during these temperature surges,” Reyes added.

He urged the public to follow the tips provided by the Department of Health (DOH) to prevent heat stroke and other heat illnesses.

Public were reminded to limit the amount of time spent outdoors; to drink plenty of water, avoid tea, coffee, soda, and alcohol; schedule heavy-duty activities for the beginning or end of the day when it’s cooler.

Apart from taking precautions against the heat, Reyes also reminded the public to remain conscious of health and safety protocols during religious gatherings.

“Apart from the possible transmission of COVID, many of our local customs present an increased risk in the transmission of infectious diseases,” he said.
