PUBL appoints Rodriguez
FORMER national coach Arlene Rodriguez was formally appointed as commissioner of the Philippine University Basketball League (PUBL) during a luncheon meeting held at the Philippine Columbian Association Clubhouse in Paco, Manila last Friday.
Rodriguez, the current head coach of Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), was chosen by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP), headed by Edwin Fabro, to lead the PUBL basketball operations.
Dr. Robert Milton A. Calo, chairman of the FESSAP membership committee, presented the certificate of appointment to Rodriguez, assisted by secretary Maria Cecille Sarmiento.
Rodriguez, who is best remembered for steering Formula Shell to its first title in the PBA by winning their series over the Robert Jaworski-mentored Anejo Rhum 65ers.
Led by seven-time Best Import awardee Bobby Parks and two-time Most Valuable Player Benjie Paras, the Zoom Masters won over the league’s most popular team, Anejo, in the finals, 4-2.
Another former national coach, Johny Tam, was appointed as deputy commissioner to help Rodriguez in “bringing back the country’s glory in collegiate basketball in international competitions.”
Also appointed were Albert N. Andaya Jr. as Director of Communication’ Edmundo Ang as Deputy Director, Fructoso Raytos and Tony Quiza nas Director and Assistant Director of technical commitee.
Rodriguez will also handle Team Philippines in 20th ASEAN University Games in Ubon, Ratchathani, Thailand on July 26.
Also given certificate of recognition were Quiza (lawn tennis) and Julius Esposo (table tennis).
