PRC1DAYS after a big fire razed a residential community in Cavite City, leaving around 700 families displaced, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) continues to aid the community.

As of May 2, the volunteers and staff of the PRC Cavite Chapter have given first aid treatment to 65 patients and taken blood pressure readings for 238 individuals.

PRC also distributed hot meals to 200 individuals and 800 loaves of bread to the displaced families, psychosocial first aid to 100 people, and child-friendly spaces activities to 100 children.

The elderly, women, and children were also given insulator mats to provide some comfort during their stay at the evacuation centers.

The PRC has been working closely with the City Social Welfare and Development and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in responding to the needs of the affected families.

Two evacuation centers have been established, with Ladislao Diwa Elementary School (LDES) accommodating 652 families and 2,606 individuals and the Biblical Church of Christ accommodating three families and 14 individuals.

“Our assets mobilized for this response include two fire trucks, one ambulance, one chapter service vehicle, and a total of 22 staff members and volunteers, including a motorcycle rider. PRC will continue to provide updates on our response efforts. Let us all work together in extending assistance and support to our fellow Filipinos in need,” Richard J. Gordon, chairman, and CEO of the PRC, said.

“We cannot fully comprehend the trauma that children experience when they lose their homes and are displaced, uncertain about their future. As the Philippine Red Cross, we have designed child-friendly spaces to alleviate that trauma, even if it’s just temporary relief from their suffering,” he added.

We provide various services such as hot meals, medical care, hygiene kits, and psychosocial support to help them cope with the aftermath of disasters. Our volunteers and staff work tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind, and we are proud to be able to make a difference in the lives of those affected. This is why we all volunteer – to be there for others even when the world no longer watches. We are there, and we will continue to be there every day,” the chairman and CEO of the PRC shared.

Dr. Gwendolyn Pang, Secretary General of PRC, said, “Crisis situations like what happened in Cavite City can cause immense suffering for individuals and communities. The Philippine Red Cross is committed to providing assistance and relief to those affected by such events.”

“Our child-friendly-space activities are designed to provide a safe and welcoming environment for children who have experienced trauma and loss due to disasters,” Dr. Pang continued.
