Poll violators

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) would do well to hit hard at those who violate the country’s election laws, rules and regulations.

This, with the start of the 45-day election campaign period for local candidates in the May 12 off-season national and local polls.

Starting March 28, local bets may start campaigning, posting election campaign materials in Comelec-designated common poster areas across the country.

Comelec deputies, including the police and the military, are authorized to remove all illegal campaign materials and those posted outside the common poster areas.

Of course, as a well-meaning Filipino, we cannot overemphasize the importance of holding free, honest, peaceful and credible elections.

Widespread irregularities during the election, which is democracy in action, will only lead to instability in the country.

That is why there is that need to go after those who try to undermine the will of the people in the forthcoming balloting.

“Sa kagustuhang manalo, siguradong may mga politiko diyan na gustong manlamang sa kapwa,” a registered voter said.

“Ito ang mga taong dapat bantayan ng Comelec para maging kapani-paniwala ang resulta ng halalan,” he added.

In our view, the poll body is in a position to ensure the holding of credible elections on May 12.
