Police scalawags

ADMITTEDLY, the few misguided police officers and men will continue to tarnish the image of the Philippine National Police (PNP), which is civilian in nature but national in scope.

But for sure, under the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr., these erring men and women in police uniform will not escape the long arm of the law.

Sooner or later, these police scalawags will be identified, arrested and charged in court since the 64-year-old Chief Executive is out to go after “rotten eggs” in the government.

Fed up with the shenanigans of hard-headed law enforcers, we cannot blame well-meaning police officers if sometimes they lose their temper while confronting these scalawags.

It will be recalled that in March 2019, then National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) director Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar literally lost his temper after seeing an erring lawman.

Eleazar rained expletives on the suspect, but then Secretary Eduardo Ano of the Department of Interior and Local Government said the NCRPO chief’s outburst was understandable.

In fact, Ano, a former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said the action of Eleazar was just a manifestation of his frustration over police scalawags.

While Eleazar publicly apologized for his outburst, he said “hindi ako magso-sorry sa mga tarantadong pulis,” drawing cheers and praises from law-abiding citizens.

We share the view of many that there’s that urgent need to intensify the campaign against “rogue” policemen as BBM completes the first month of his presidency July 31.

We are all for this.
