PNP to public: Be cautious in beaches, pools
CITING alarming drowning statistics, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has urged the public to be cautious near rivers, seas or in swimming pools this summer.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that drowning is a serious danger to the public, with drowning as one of the leading causes of death for children ages 1 to 4 over the past 10 years.
It also goes with the fact that many Filipinos do not know how to swim.
Amid the drowning deaths, the PNP has reminded the public to be extra careful this summer particularly when they go to the beach, troop to the river or enjoy swimming pools.
The PNP leadership headed by General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil urged the public to be extra cautious, especially those planning to visit beaches and other recreational spots amid a noted increase in deaths due to drowning over the past two years.
From April 1 to May 31, 2023, there were 125 reported drowning incidents which claimed the lives of 126 people and injured six others.
There were also seven reported missing during the same period.
During the same period in 2024, there were a total of 90 recorded drowning cases which led to the death of 94 people and the hospitalization of two others.
The highest number of drowning deaths were reported by the Police Regional Office 4A, 25 cases; the PRO-1, 23; and the PRO-10, 9.
Gen. Marbil took the opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of always putting safety first.
As part of the ongoing PNP LIGTAS SUMVAC (Summer Vacation) 2025 initiative, the PNP is working alongside local government units and other law enforcement agencies to enhance safety measures, increase patrols and provide public advisories to help prevent accidents nationwide.
The PNP also continues to encourage the public to remain vigilant, be aware of their surroundings and always stay alert while enjoying their time outdoors.
The PNP chief emphasized that police presence will be felt in high-traffic tourist destinations, particularly along the coastlines, where vacationers flock to relax.
Still, he reminded everyone to be responsible and keep safety in mind, not just when they are in the water, but in any surroundings.
“We want everyone to enjoy the holiday season, but it is crucial that we all take safety seriously.
Whether at the beach or in any public area, let us make sure we’re watching out for each other and following safety guidelines,” Gen. Marbil said.
The PNP’s appeal also aligns with the guidance of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who continues to prioritize peace and order across the country, especially during high-traffic periods like the summer, said PNP Public Information Office chief, Colonel Randulf Tuaño.
The President’s focus on security ensures that citizens can experience a relaxing vacation without compromising their safety, he said.
