PNP honors slain AKG agent, wounded pal in daring kidnap rescue
PHILIPPINE National Police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco D. Marbil on Tuesday led his men in honoring the two members of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group who were shot while in a successful effort to rescue two female Chinese tourists kidnapped by their compatriots in Angeles City, Pampanga last Saturday.
Police Staff Sergeant Nelson Santiago was shot and killed while his pal, Police Chief Master Sgt. Eden Accad was seriously wounded, during the rescue operation which also resulted in the capture of the two Chinese men who abducted the victims and demanded a P50 million Yuan or roughly P406 million ransom for the victims’ safe release.
Marbil motored to Tanay, Rizal to visit the wake of SSgt. Santiago and condole with his grieving family. He also pinned the posthumous PNP Medalya ng Kadakilaan or PNP Heroism Medal to the slain officer and extended financial assistance to his family.
“The bravery and sacrifice of our officers are beyond measure. We honor their courage and will ensure that justice is served,” said the PNP chief even as ordered the immediate release of all benefits due to the two AKG men.
On Tuesday morning, Marbil visited the wounded Chief MSgt. Accad at the Angeles University Foundation Medical Center in Angeles City to extend his support and ensure that the wounded cop will get the best possible care.
He also awarded the Medalya ng Kadakilaan and Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting or PNP Wounded Personnel Medal to Accad, who also received a financial assistance from the PNP chief.
“We will continue to uphold our commitment to ensuring public safety and security while supporting the families of our personnel who risk their lives in the line of duty,” Marbil said.
Santiago and Accad were among the PNP-AKG operatives who were sent to rescue the two kidnap victims identified as Zhou Lin, 24; and Zhou Jiangxiang, 33, around 2 p.m. last Saturday.
PNP-AKG director Brig. Gen. Cosme A. Abrenica said that the operation resulted in the safe rescue of the two kidnap victims and the arrest of their two captors identified as Hu Kai, a 27-year-old native of Jiangxi, China; and Dongze Lyu, 30., of Liaoning province in China.
The two have been charged for kidnapping and serious illegal detention and violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013 before the Department of Justice.
