PH gets ILO post
THE Philippines, one of the world’s top manpower exporters, has been elected as member to the governing body of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
In the view of many, it is certainly an honor for the country to be elected to the governing body of ILO, the Geneva, Switzerland-based agency of the United Nations (UN).
Labor and Employment Secretary Bienvenido “Benny” Laguesma said the election took place during the ongoing 112th International Labor Conference (ILC).
It will be recalled that in 1975, then Labor Minister Blas F. Ople was elected president of ILO’s 60th International Labor Conference, the only Filipino to hold the post.
And in 1983, ILO awarded the newsman-turned-government official, acknowledged as the “Father of the Labor Code of the Philippines,” a “Gold Medal of Appreciation.”
Note that Secretary Laguesma was one of the “Bright Boys” of Ople, who also became president of the Philippine Senate and secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Philippines, together with other elected members to the ILO governing body, will serve a three-year term ending June 2027.
The governing body is the executive arm of ILO, playing a crucial role in determining the orgamization’s agenda and budget.
Likewise, members of the powerful body elect the ILO secretary general.
Without doubt, the Philippines getting that vital ILO post is seen to encourage our overseas Filipino workers to do better.
