‘Peace covenants’
WITH the help of well-meaning people, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) ought to prioritize the signing of “peace covenants” among local candidates in this year’s May 12 polls.
Note that the election campaign period for local candidates started the other day, March 28, a good 45 days before the balloting.
Thus, we, like other peace-loving Filipinos, cannot overemphasize the importance of forging these “peace covenants.”
The poll body, chaired by lawyer George Erwin Garcia, has called on the country’s candidates not to give money, food and other valuables to the electorate.
Admittedly, election spending during national, local and even barangay elections has reached alarming proportions.
