Party-list solons
SECTORAL lawmakers, men and women, play a key role in the crafting of pieces of legislation in the House of Representatives.
Although they are only a few, party-list solons are a “formidable force” to reckon with during floor deliberations and committee investigations.
Thus, we cannot overemphasize the importance of sending more of these lawmakers to the Lower House of Congress.
And it is heartening to know that many former national leaders are party-list nominees in the May 12 off-season national and local polls.
Hopefully, sectoral lawmakers in the coming 20th Congress will continue to fire the imagination of the more than 120 million Filipinos.
Close to 69 million of the Filipino people are registered voters.
Note that House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez of Leyte was instrumental in encouraging these public servants to play a vanguard role in meeting the many needs of the people.
“Sa totoo lang, ngayon ay marami ng well-meaning Filipinos ang gustong maging party-list lawmakers,” a former barangay official said.
“Kasi nakita nila na malaki ang magagawa nila para mapabilis ang socio-economic development ng bansa,” the ex-village executive added.
In the view of various quarters, sectoral congressmen and congresswomen are here to stay.
