Nograles pushes for stronger disaster response system
IN the wake of the recent earthquakes that shook Myanmar and Thailand, mayoralty candidate Karlo Nograles on Wednesday emphasized the urgent need for Davao City to strengthen its disaster prevention and response capabilities, especially with the Philippines’ vulnerability to natural disasters.
“These events are reminders that we must be proactive, not reactive,” Nograles said.
“When calamities strike, every second matters. Preparedness is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.”
Nograles reiterated his proposal for a real-time SMS alert system to warn residents about approaching typhoons, earthquakes, floods, and other emergencies.
The system would allow residents to receive timely alerts via text message, giving them enough time to take necessary precautions and potentially save lives.
According to the former Civil Service Commission Chair, “our approach is simple: let’s use technology to protect lives. With text alerts, we empower Dabawenyos to act fast and to stay safe.”
Nograles also stressed the need for continuous community dialogue.
“We should not just send information—we must also listen. That’s why we’ll hold regular townhalls and open lines of communication with every barangay so we also get the people’s input on how to respond to potential calamities. Disaster preparedness is a two-way street. Your voice matters.”
Nograles’s campaign has been consistent in promoting accessibility, transparency, and action from City Hall—principles he believes are essential not only in day-to-day governance but especially in times of crisis.
“Dabawenyos deserve a City Hall that they can see, hear, and feel. When disasters strike, you need a leader who will be there for you—not someone who’s missing when you need them the most,” Nograles added.
As regional tremors continue to remind Southeast Asia of nature’s unpredictability, Nograles calls on all Dabawenyos to prepare—and for the city to lead in making sure no one is left behind when the ground begins to shake.
