THE Gabriela Women’s Party-list has filed a measure designating August 14 of every year as the National Memorial Day for Comfort Women.

Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas said this is the group’s unwavering commitment to uphold the rights and dignity of women.

This bill aims to honor the bravery and resilience of the comfort women, and to raise awareness about the atrocities they endured during World War II.

“The comfort women were victims of sexual violence and exploitation, subjected to unimaginable suffering and trauma. It is our duty to remember their stories and ensure that such atrocities are never repeated,” Brosas said.

“Kung ipagpapatuloy ng gobyerno ang pakikipagpatintero sa US at China, tiyak na maiipit muli ang kababaihan sa gitna ng umuusbong na tensyon sa pagitan ng dalawang bansa,” Brosas added.

Brosas emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the surviving comfort women in their pursuit of justice and redress.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to the struggles faced by the comfort women, both in seeking justice from the Japanese government and in their everyday lives. The Philippine government must actively assist and support them in their fight for justice,” she stated.

The bill will serve as a reminder to future generations about the importance of upholding human rights and standing against all forms of violence and exploitation.

Gabriela Women’s Party remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of women, and will continue to push for legislation that promotes gender equality and addresses the historical injustices suffered by women, including the comfort women.

“We will continue to stand in solidarity with the comfort women and work towards a society where their rights are respected and their stories are acknowledged. Let us remember their bravery and honor their memory on the National Memorial Day for Comfort Women,” Brosas said.
