THE hard-hitting chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) has issued a stern warning against “moonlighting policemen.”

We are made to believe that there’s really a need to rid the PNP of officers and men who serve as bodyguards for private individuals.

If not, these few “misguided” cops will continue to tarnish the image of the PNP, which is civilian in nature but national in scope.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil issued the warning after the arrest of two lawmen, who were serving as security guards for a Chinese.

Knowing full well the importance of ensuring the safety of the people, Marbil said cops must be available at all times to protect the public.

The PNP chief said the “police must be available at all times to address the needs and concerns” of the more than 110 million Filipinos.

Marbil said the two policemen, who were arrested inside a posh village in Muntinlupa City, ought to be dismissed from the service.

He had earlier ordered 85 percent of all police officers and men across the Philippines to be engaged in field duties.

“We are committed to making our communities safer by ensuring a strong police presence in public spaces,” Marbil said.

Various quarters, particularly the ordinary citizens, said General Marbil did the right thing when he issued the warning.
