HERE’S good news to local boxing community.

The two vacant titles in the World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight and flyweight divisions could be another good opportunity for the Filipino fighters.

Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham “Baham” Mitra said the WBC, through Mauro Betti, has asked for his assistance in staging bouts to fill up its vacant international titles in minimumweight and flyweight divisions.

In a letter to GAB, the WBC informed Mitra of the existing vacancies in the said divisions and asked for his help to find “interested Filipino promoters to stage fights for the purpose of filling up the vacant international titles.”

Betti said this will also help fulfill the dream of Filipino boxers to fight for major titles under the prestigious world boxing body, WBC.

“I would be very grateful if you could help me achieve a chance in your country,” Betti told Mitra.

Mitra, on the other hand, assured his support in reaching out to Filipino fight promoters.

“Magandang pagkakataon ito para sa ating mga local fighters at promoters at fighters. Mahirap ang katayuan ng ating ekonomiya sa kasalukuyang pandemic, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them,” said Mitra, who was personally appointed by President Duterte as GAB Chairman in 2016.

The three-time lawmaker from Palawan also immediately posted a notice on the official page of GAB on Facebook.

Both Betti and Mitra are members of the powerful WBC Board of Governors.

The international title is one of the WBC’s highest regional championships below world level and the WBC silver.

Winners of the international belt are usually included in the organization’s top 15 contenders list and are eligible to challenge the reigning world champion in optional defense.
