A total of 5 million plastic cards for driver’s licenses are set to arrive within the year with an initial 1 million up for delivery within two months to address the shortage in cards, Land Transportation Office (LTO) Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said Monday.

Mendoza explained that the supplier for the plastic cards, Banner Plasticards, Inc., will deliver weekly supplies of 500,000 each month.

“All in all we’re looking at around a million plastic cards in the next 60 days, so that would be sufficient to wipe out whatever backlog we have now,” Mendoza said during an interview.

The twin deliveries of 500,000 plastic cards are sufficient to address the current backlog of 900,000 cards for the driver’s license, he said.

The LTO chief added that the agency expects at least 5 million cards within the year.

Last Thursday, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista received the initial delivery of 5,000 plastic cards from Banner Plasticard, Inc.
