NBA veteran Jonas Valanciunas posted another double-double — his 8th in a FIBA Basketball World Cup game — as Lithuania routed Slovenia, 100-84, in their classification match infront of 11,003 fans at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The 6-11 Valanciunas finished with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 12 rebounds in 27 minutes to power Lithuania to a wire-to-wire victory over Slovenia and its NBA superstar Luka Doncic Valanciunas, the No. 5 pick overall by the Toronto Raptors during the 2011 NBA Draft, moved closer to Jose Ortiz, the leader over the past 30 years with 10 double-doubles If Valanciunas also plays in their all-Baltic game against Latvia on Saturday, he needs only five rebounds to overtake Spanish legend Pau Gasol in fifth place overall in World Cup history.

“It was tough to find energy after the loss to Serbia, but I’m happy we found it. I’m happy we came really prepared and ready for this game. We’re not gonna give up. We’re playing for our country, for the fans, for people who come to support us, people who are watching us on TV screens. We’re gonna fight until the end,” said Valanciunas.

But it was not all Valanciunas,

Ignas Brazdeikis added 15 points, four assists, two rebounds and two steals, and Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Deividas Sirvydis, who contributed 14 points apiece.

Vaidas Kariniauskas also did well for the Lithuanians, who handed out 10 assists without scoring a single point in 16 minutes.

The only other player to do it over the last 30 years was Marcelo Milanesio of Argentina in 1994..

Doncic, easily one of the more popular players in the Manila edition of the event, finished with a game-high 29 points despite shooting only 7-of-21 from the field, with six rebounds, three steals and two assists.

The high-scoring Dallas Mavericks superstar leads all players in scoring with an average of 26.7 points in seven games, including four in Okinawa.

Aleksej Nikolic, Mike Tobey and Zoran Dragic combined for 39 points in Slovenia’s losing effort.

“We tried to match their quality, and in some moments we did it, we came to -2 in the third quarter, but could not maintain that level of play for the rest of the game. They made a lot of open shots, we missed all of them, that’s why they deserved to win,” said Nikolic.

Lithuania’s three-point shooting pro

Overall, Lithuania — the only country to beat five-time champion United States so far — had a better shooting percentage than Slovenia.

With Kuzminskas sinking all his four three-point shots, Lithuania 14-of-25 from deep conpared to Slovenia’ s 15-of-40 from the same distance.

Doncic went 4-of-13 for only 30 percent.

The Lithuanians also fared better from the two-point area, 59 percent ( 38-of-64) to 38 percetn( 23-of-60).

With the defeat, Slovenia is relegated to the battle for seventh to eighth places with Italy.

Italy lost to Latvia, 82-87, earlier Thursday.
