Lions, Falcons outplay rivals in Mayor Asis Cup

BAYUGAN, Agusan Del Sur — Wengburs Apartelle and Ella Store-San Beda recorded its second win, while ARQ Builders -Adamson University bounced back from an early loss in the Mayor Kirk Asis Open Invitational basketball tournament at the Lope Asis Memorial Gymnasium here Thursday.

In a keenly-watched battle of NCAA teams, San Beda defeated Arianos Construction-Emilio Aguinaldo College, 66-53, for its second straight win in the short, five-team tournament supported by Mayor Asis as part of the city’s 17th Charter Day Anniversary.

Adamson outclassed Vincare Pharma-University of Perpetual Help System Altas, 72-49, to even its record to 1-1 in the tournament being held in this northern Agusan del Sur city noted for its lucrative cut flower industry.

Brayan Sajonia led the balanced scoring attack for the Yuri Escueta-mentored Red Lions with 14 points and three rebounds, followed by Zedjay Etulle with 10 points, Emmanuel Tagle and Yukien Andrada with nine points each and JC Bonzalida with eight points.

King Gurtiza, Jethro Bacud and Aldeo Lucero carried the fight for the Generals, who debuted with an 89-85 win over Bustamante Construction-University of Visayas.

Gurtiza finished with 11 points, Bacud added nine and Lucero had eight.

Cedrick Manzano tallied 15 points and nine rebounds for Adamson of coach Nash Racela.

Matty Erolon contributed 10 points, Joshua Yerro had nine points and Emmanuel Anabo added seven points for the Falcons.

Only Shawn Orgo managed double-digit scores for the Olsen Racela-mentored Altas with 15 points.

Christian Pagaran and Mark Gojo Cruz added seven and six points, respectively.

Well-known basketball coach-organizer Van Halen Parmis said at stake in the tournament is more than P800,000, with the champion pocketing the lion’s share of P300,000.

The runner-up will receive P200,000, the third placer will earn P150,000, the fourth placer will bring home P100,000 and the fifth placer will earn P75,000.

Tournament format is single-round robin competition with the top two teams battling for the coveted championship.
