THE Philippines, one of the world’s major manpower exporters, celebrates tomorrow (May 1) “Labor Day.”

“Labor Day” is one of the regular non-working holidays in this Southeast Asian nation of English-speaking people.

On this special day, the government and the private sector pay tribute to the contributions of workers to the country’s socio-economic development.

President Marcos is expected to spearhead this year’s nationwide celebration of “Labor Day” or “Araw ng mga Manggagawa.”

Records show that it was on May 1, 1903 when thousands of Filipino workers marched from Tondo, Manila to Malacanang Palace.

The marchers demanded fair pay, better working conditions and Philippine independence from the Americans.

The march-rally was organized by the Union Obrero Democratica de Pilipina, the country’s first labor federation.

During the incumbency of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos, the government, on Labor Day, granted workers various benefits.

Today, President Bongbong Marcos’ government is committed to improve the living conditions of workers in the government and private sector.

We, thus, commend the administration for doing everything to meet the many needs of the workforce.
