THE House committee on transportation will conduct a hearing this Wednesday to determine the extent of devastation caused by Super Typhoon Odette and recommend measures to help the victims.

Samar Rep. Edgar Mary Sarmiento, panel chairman, said his panel invited officials from the Departments of Transportation (DOTr) and of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Sarmiento said the hearing was an offshoot of the instruction given by Speaker Lord Allan Velasco and House Majority Leader and Leyte 1st District Rep. Martin G. Romualdez.

“We really want to know from the Department of Transportation [kung] kumusta si seaport, si airport, ilang airport ang na-damage anong commercially usable, anong hindi,” Sarmiento said.

“Dapat meron na tayong roofing designs that are wind resistant, sana ground work yung electricity, pati dito sa distribution ng Department of Energy na i-mandate na ang mga gas stations magjkaroon sila ng (power) generating sets kasi kung sakali ganito mangyayari at least magpa-function ang generating sets so as with the water system,” Sarmiento said.

Sarmiento also said that the House of Representatives will help augment the needed funds to help the victims.

“We’re trying to size up what’s going to be the result tomorrow, once all the position papers are presented to us then…. we decide on what to do,” Sarmiento said.
