THE chairman of the House committee on Metro Manila Development (MMD) is set to convene the panel and assess the massive flooding and extensive damage, especially in the National Capital Region (NCR), brought about by the onslaught of Typhoon Carina.

According to Manila Rep. Rolando Valeriano, the committee is crafting of policies and programs that will promote and enhance the development of Metro Manila.

All the House representatives from Metro Manila are automatically members of the said Committee.

It is expected that the Committee members, whose areas where the ones devastated by Typhoon Carina, would actively participate to seek explanations from relevant government agencies on the hearing to be conducted on July 31, Wednesday at 10am.

“Una po sa lahat, kailangang magbigay ng paliwanag ng ating mga ahensya, gaya ng DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways, at ng MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority), kung bakit hindi kinaya ng ating flood control systems ang buhos ng ulan ni bagyong Carina. Totoo po na record breaking ang rainfall na dinulot ng bagyong ito, subalit dapat ay may kahandaan na tayo sa ganito. Expect the worst lagi, ika nga. Ang ating dapat na benchmark ay mga super typhoon na gaya ng Ondoy sa dami ng dalang ulan, at Yolanda, sa lakas ng hanging dala-dala,” Valeriano said.

“Bukod sa DPWH at MMDA, inaasahan din ng MMD Committee ang pagbibigay ng presentasyon ng mga ahensya na sya namang tagapaghatid ng tulong sa ating mga kababayan sa panahon ng sakuna, gaya ng DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development).

“Ang mas mahalaga, ang kailangan nating marinig ay ang long term na mga plano at programa ng mag ahensyang ito. Ang ultimate na solusyon ay prevention. Ang hindi na maranasan ng paulit-ulit ang ganitong sitwasyon. Kaawa awa naman ang ating mga kababayan na parang laging nagre-reboot ang mga buhay sa tuwing may darating na bagyo,” Valeriano added.
