Heavier traffic seen

EVERY year, there’s heavy traffic in various parts of heavily-populated Metropolitam Manila and surrounding areas during the Christmas Season.

Thus, this early, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has come up with highly-effective traffic management measures.

The measures are aimed at addressing the perennial traffic problems confronting motorists, passengers and even pedestrians during the Holiday Season.

Effective midnight of November 18 up to midnight of December 25, all road right-of-way excavation activities are suspended, according to the MMDA.

Likewise, MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said MM shopping malls will start operating at 11 a.m., instead of the usual 10 a.m., on the same dates.

Not only that. Artes said he would also push for extending the operating hours of the EDSA Bus Carousel, Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT).

Of course, we share the view of the MMDA top honcho that extending the operating hours of LRT and MRT would be a big help to commuters.

“Talagang mas mabilis ang biyahe sa LRT at MRT, at nakatitipid pa ang mga commuter,” an ordinary worker said.

“Kapag sumakay ka ng bus o jeepney ay aabutin ka ng siyam-siyam bago ka makauwi ng bahay,” said a Quezon City resident who works in Makati City.

The government ought to speed up the flow of traffic during the Christmas Season, notably during the so-called rush hours, not only in the metropolis but elsewhere.
