Flash floods

THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned of flash floods or landslides in some parts of the country.

This, despite the fact that summer in this poverty-stricken Southeast Asian nation of election-crazy and English-speaking people starts in March and ends around May or June.

In fact, the humid weather in summer makes it the perfect time of the year for everybody, including foreign nationals, to go to the beach

But PAGASA said that flooding or landslides may occur in the Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao due to rains from the so-called easterlies and northeast monsoon.

The Visayas and Mindanao may experience isolated but sudden heavy rains and thunderstorms caused by the easterlies or warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.

“Napapakamot na lang ng ulo ang mga ordinaryong Filipino dahil maliban sa tag-init na ay nandiyan pa ang nararanasang El Nino weather phenomenon sa bansa,” a farmer said.

Hopefully, these reports of flooding and landslides may serve as a wake-up call to concerned state authorities to be prepared for possible disasters during the rainy season.

Let’s not forget that the Philippines is one of the favorite “sparring partners” of destructive typhoons and storm in the Asia-Pacific region.

Every year, these natural disasters claim the lives of many people and destroy billions of pesos worth of property across the country.
