FARM Fresh ended Capital1’s three-match winning streak while keeping its quarterfinal hopes alive with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 victory in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Philsports Arena yesterday.

After producing a combined 94 points in the last two matches, Russian Marina Tushova, the Solar Spikers’ do-it-all reinforcement had to bleed her points, logging 17-of-66 kills and had a block.

With its third loss in seven matches, Capital1 stalled its march to the quarterfinals, but coach Roger Gorayeb’s squad still has another shot of making it with a victory over last-place Galeries Tower on Tuesday.

Akari, Cignal and PLDT have already secured spots in the quarterfinal, a knockout affair.

The Chargers, meanwhile, sustained their finest start in club history, moving on the cusp of sweeping the preliminary round.

American Oly Okaro dropped 30 points while Ivy Lacsina added 19 points as Akari extended its perfect run to seven with a 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 conquest of Nxled.

The loss, the sixth in seven matches, eliminated the Chameleons in the quarters race.

Despite the Foxies’ two consecutive losses, Japanese coach Shota Sato expressed confidence in his team to remain in quarterfinal contention.

“Our level of play is there despite the setbacks,” Sato said through an interpreter. “I trust our players, and we’ll make the necessary adjustments in training.”

The Chargers’ turnaround this conference was attributed to Japanese coach Taka Minowa’s system, where the players are in sync and showing discipline in every match.

“Even we went through a lot of challenges, nandoon pa rin kami,” said setter Michelle Cobb, one of the Akari’s pioneers who lobbed 18 excellent sets and fired a match-best four service aces that went along with four kills and a block.

“Team effort lang talaga. Lahat gusto may mangyari. Sumusunod lang kami at lahat may tiwala sa isa’t isa,” she added.

Cobb filled in for injured playmaker Kamille Cal, one of the vital cogs in the Chargers’ reversal of fortunes this conference.

With a 3-4 slate, Farm Fresh grabbed the No. 8 spot from Choco Mucho (2-4), which will play Creamline tomorrow at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Foxies will next face the Chargers on Tuesday in a must-win game.

Tushova, who scored a PVL all-time record of 49 points against Nxled last weekend, was scouted well by Farm Fresh.

Leila Cruz, the Solar Spikers’ third overall rookie pick, had 10 points and collected nine digs.
