Erring cops
DESPITE the government’s nationwide drive against erring law enforcers, there are still officers and men of the Philippine National Police (PNP) involved in shenanigans.
We concede that the nefarious activities of these few “rotten eggs” tarnish the image of the PNP, which is civilian in nature but national in scope, in the international community.
And note that the top PNP leadership has also mounted a campaign to ensure that only the best police applicants join the country’s premier law enforcement agency.
That’s why we commend the PNP’s Integrity Monitoring and Enhancement Group (IMEG) for arresting a policeman for allegedly trying to facilitate the application of an aspiring cop.
PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo “Guilor” T. Eleazar identified the suspect as a certain Sgt. Edmund delos Reyes, who reportedly demanded P6,000 from a lady police applicant.
Reports said the suspect assured the police applicant that she would be included in the final list of PNP recruits, who are set to take their oath office on July 30.
Delos Reyes was arrested by IMEG operatives during an entrapment operation at a fast-food chain along Boni Serrano Avenue near Camp Crame Monday night.
B/Gen. Flynn Dongbo, IMEG director, said the suspect was arrested by his highly-trained operatives shortly after receiving marked money from the police applicant.
Dongbo called on the public to report PNP personnel involved in irregularities.
Despite stern reminders, the PNP chief said there are still policemen who try to take the crooked path, adding the police leadership will not stop in its efforts to address corruption.
People may report police anomalies to PNP hotlines 0998-970-2286 (Smart) and 0995-795-2569 (Globe).
